How to Install a Sump Pump

In old homes where there is a problem of basement water logging or flooding the sump pumps can come in handy. Installing a sump pump is easy if you go step by step and follow the steps mentioned in this article. Basically consists of finding the exact place and source of problem, perfectly digging the place to make a sump, installing the pump in the sump.

  1. Finding the problem

During a rain you may check your basement mostly the water problems are the result of poor drainage system. Before you start to repair your basement make sure the gutters are not clogged with leaves and debris so that the water is flowing easily through them.

  1. Location for sump

Make sure that the basement is not built with hard concrete as you will have to dig a sump. So you may find a suitable location for the sump where you can dig as it needs to be connected with a pipe which can take the water out from your house. Trace the outline of the sump on the floor.

  1. Digging

To do this first you will have to dig the concrete floor so for this you may rent in a jackhammer or may use big sledgehammer to do the task. To make it easier you may make holes alternatively over the trace lining of the sump and then hammer it away part by part and it will be easier. If your floor has steel cables or reinforced iron then use metal cutter to get rid of them. You will at least need to dig the sump for 12-14 cms deeper than the lining.

  1. Placing the sump liner

Place some gravel so that the slump liner fits easily into the sump and it helps the liner to fit in. placing the gravel will provide good drainage and help water to get into the sump where it can be easily pumped out later. Now seat the sump liner and then put gravel around the liner and use cement or concrete to seal off the sump liner, you may pour the concrete or cement to cover the sump liner till the neck of the liner.

  1. Pump installation

Place the piping from your sump pump to the outer of your home through the outlet. Mostly the pumps use PVC piping but always read the information manual. Always fit the entire section dry before attaching anything and try to work in a spacious place so as to minimize the exposure to the solvent fumes and remember to cover both in and out of the couplings.

Keep the pump in the liner and attach the last part of the pipe and link the pump with it. You may drill numerous holes in the liner to make the water to get in to be sump and get pumped out. Make sure that the diameters of the drilled holes are smaller than those of the gravel used so that the gravel cannot enter the sump liner and cause blockade.

Check the position of the float so as to make sure that the float can rise and fall along the water level without any problem in the sump. It is just a simple thing of just lining the pump in the center with the sump liner. Check valve is used to throw out the water left in the pipe after the pump is turned off and this avoids the motor to burn out. Fix it appropriately and tighten it with the help of a screwdriver.

Now connect the pump to the electric supply and it’s time to test your work. Fill in a bucket of water and test the rig also check the pipe connection for dripping and leakage to make sure that it pumps the water out of the house as you want and also make sure that the check valve is working perfectly when you turn off the pump.
